Fast Eddy

Today is Fast Eddy's 89th birthday. He passed away in 2007. He was my Grandpa, and it finally hit me today how much I miss him.

He was a paratrooper in WWII (505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division) and jumped 9 times, including Battle of Bulge & North Africa. One thing that always made us laugh is how he'd describe himself as "tougher than cat shit and twice as nasty."Here's some info about Fast Eddy from the Veterans History Project.

We were very close, and throughout my life I would be intentional about spending as much time with him as possible, and I'd call when I couldn't see him. I remember we used to go fishing a lot when I was a kid on his 35 foot boat "The Incredible" (which I named when I was 6 years old seeing it for the first time...I said 'that's incredible' and the name stuck). Another fond memory was in 2006 when I took my Grandpa fishing out at the Channel Islands off Ventura County. It was our last fishing trip together, and we both knew it.

Seems in this fast paced 'dog eat dog' world, we seem to so easily get distracted from what is truly important. If there's one thing you take away from reading this, my hope would that you ask yourself this: "Who in my life, older in years, could I help, I mean really really help make their final frail years merry and meaningful. And what would they want me to learn from them and pay forward to the younger generation?"

Eddy Tevault was indeed one of a kind, and it reminds me of the lyrics to my favorite songs "Do You Realize" by my favorite band, The Flaming Lips.

Do You Realize

Do You Realize - that you have the most beautiful face

Do You Realize - we're floating in space -

Do You Realize - that happiness makes you cry

Do You Realize - that everyone you know someday will die

And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know

You realize that life goes fast

It's hard to make the good things last

You realize the sun doesn't go down

It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

Do You Realize - Oh - Oh - Oh

Do You Realize - that everyone you know

Someday will die -

And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know

You realize that life goes fast

It's hard to make the good things last

You realize the sun doesn't go down

It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

Do You Realize - that you have the most beautiful face

Do You Realize
